Straight answers on ECU and DME unlocking, pricing, turnaround and what we do and do not cover. If your question is not here, call (850) 398-7279.
What is ECU or DME unlocking?
Modern engine controllers ship with the write side locked by the manufacturer. The module will happily be read, but it refuses to accept a modified file. Unlocking removes that write protection so the controller can be read out and written back to. It is a one-time operation on the module itself and it is separate from any calibration change.
BMW calls the engine controller a DME, Mercedes calls it an ME or MED, most other makes call it an ECU or PCM. The job is the same.
How much does ECU unlocking cost?
$250 flat — every make, whether you mail the module in or bring us the car. Pulling the controller for you is included in that price.
There is one exception. On Mopar — Charger and Challenger — the ECU has to be opened to the board to be unlocked, which is a different job, so those are $300.
A small number of controllers have to go back to AutoTuner for a remote unlock rather than being done on our bench, and those are quoted separately. Send the VIN to (850) 398-7279 and you will get a firm answer before anything is booked.
Do you unlock ECUs on cars that aren't European?
Yes. Unlocking covers most makes, domestic and import — Ford, GM, Ram, Jeep, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan and Infiniti are all on the list alongside the European platforms. The coverage page breaks it down by make.
Repair and maintenance work is different: that side of the shop is European only — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche and MINI.
Can I mail my ECU in, or do I have to bring the car?
Either works, and it is the same $250. Mail-in: pull the module, box it, send it, and it goes back out to you once it is done. Most customers outside the local area do it that way.
If you would rather not pull it yourself, bring the car to the shop in Valparaiso and we will take care of removal and refit at no extra charge.
How long does it take?
Most unlocks are done the same day the module is on the bench, and mail-in modules normally go back out the next business day.
The exception is the group of controllers that have to be unlocked remotely by AutoTuner rather than on our bench — those add turnaround time. Whether your vehicle falls in that group is something we can tell you from the VIN before you ship anything.
What if my ECU gets locked again later?
We unlock it again, free. That holds for as long as you own the vehicle — if a dealer visit, a software update or anything else re-locks a controller we unlocked, bring it back and it gets done again at no charge.
It is not a warranty you have to register for or a card you have to keep. We did the module, so it is ours to sort out.
Will unlocking change how my car drives?
No. Unlocking only removes the write protection. The calibration in the controller is untouched and the car drives exactly as it did before.
Any change in how the car behaves comes from a calibration being loaded afterwards, which is a separate decision and a separate conversation.
Is my 2020 or newer BMW or Mercedes supported?
Many are. The 2020-and-up Bosch MDG1 and MG1 families used across BMW and Mercedes are on the list, as are the Mercedes MRD controllers.
Worth knowing: several of those later units are remote-unlock rather than bench, including MG1CS221 behind the BMW S68 and N74, and much of the 2020+ Mercedes MDG1 line. They are still doable — just not same-day. Send the VIN and we will tell you which side of that line your car sits on.
What can't you unlock?
Being straight about the gaps saves everyone a wasted shipment. As of today the following are not supported:
- Cummins — all of it. Every Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel.
- C8 Corvette and GM Global B — Corvette coverage stops at the C7.
- Chrysler GPEC5 — rules out the 2021+ Wrangler and Gladiator 3.6 and the 2023+ Ram 1500 5.7 eTorque.
- 3.0 Hurricane I6 — not tunable on any tool at present.
- Legacy Ford PCMs, 1996–2010 — no Oak, Copperhead or TriCore.
- Ford transmission controllers, including the 10R80.
- GM L5P Duramax 2017+ (E41) and LML (E86).
If your vehicle is on that list we will say so on the phone rather than after you have shipped a module.
I have a 2018 or newer Dodge, Ram, Jeep or Chrysler. Is there a catch?
There can be. Those vehicles have a Security Gateway module sitting between the OBD port and the vehicle bus. It allows diagnostic reads but blocks writes, which affects any OBD-based work on the car.
It does not affect a module we have on the bench. Call with the VIN before you plan an OBD job on one of these and we will tell you where you stand.
Do you tune the car after unlocking?
Unlocking and tuning are two different things, and $250 buys the unlock. What goes on the controller afterwards is your call — bring us the plan and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we are the right shop for.
Where are you, and when are you open?
147 Nordberg Ave, Valparaiso, FL 32580 — a few minutes from Niceville, Fort Walton Beach and Eglin, and a short run from Destin and Crestview.
Open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Central. Closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Phone is (850) 398-7279.
How do I book?
ECU and DME unlocking can be booked online. Everything else — maintenance, diagnostics, inspections — is a drop-off rather than a timed appointment: text or email your name, best number, and the vehicle's year, make, model and VIN, and we will sort out a day.
Is there a military or veteran discount?
Two of them right now.
Through November, ECU and DME unlocks are $100 for active duty and veterans — normally $250. That is a give-back for the month, not a standing price.
On repair and maintenance work, $50 off your first visit, code EGLIN50, with no minimum purchase. That one does not stack with the unlock price above.
Proof is a military ID, or a state ID with a veteran endorsement. One look, no forms, no photocopies.
What makes you different from the dealer?
Twenty years in the trade and Mercedes-Benz Master Certified training, applied without the dealer's overhead or its service-writer layer. You talk to the technician working on your car.
The dealers in Fort Walton Beach are good at what they do. We are the second opinion, and the place to go for the electronics work they will not take on.
